Animal Physiology

Basic Knowledge About The Study Of Animal Physiology And Its Applications

Animal physiology is the study of animal anatomy, to put it simply. A graduate of this department can practically utilize their knowledge by pursuing careers in fishery, veterinary and such. However, they can also choose to pursue higher education and receive a Master’s or PhD degree even though animal physiology degrees are most common at the undergraduate/baccalaureate levels.

Fields Covered By Animal Physiology Program

Now, let us take a better look at the fields covered by this department. The very basic foundational courses include studying animal genetics and biological structures. It often surprises potential students that they also have to study animal behavior as a primary course. This should not come as a surprise because study of animal’s psychology offers a better understanding of their social structure, which, in turn provides valuable insight in resource and energy management. This is why many students pursue a more research oriented career after graduation. Undergraduate programs also include laboratory experimentation and fieldwork in addition to classroom lectures and instructions. Cell and molecular physiology, chemistry, genetics, ecology, conservation, evolution and human biology are also included in the general courses regardless of the institution.

Educational Prerequisites

Most institutions accept any applicants as long as they have graduated high school or a General Educational Development (better known as GED). However, since a student must take advanced courses in chemistry and biology, some schools refuse to accept applicants who do not possess a better-than-moderate background in science.

Career Opportunities

The basic job of an animal physiologist is to identify, explain and find ways to control the external and internal elements that affect the physiological and psychological structure of animals. They also study their cellular and organ developments. Animal reproduction and growth is a major focal point for these physiologists because their study is vital for proper management and success of animal farms. They are also employed by pharmaceutical companies and research organization. Research works require group work and coordination between physiologists. That is why students who wish to pursue career in research should maintain an efficient communication with other experienced and less experienced physiologists.
